New Releases — August, 2011

Our members are busy devouring the second paperback original pick, Oil on Water by Helon Habila (W.W. Norton). Set in current day Nigeria, Oil on Water follows two reporters, one seasoned and jaded, but sage, Zaq, and Rufus, a novice who is eager to learn from Zaq as they pursue the kidnapping of a foreign oil company's executive's wife. The story is an old one: the conflicts between development and preservation and, of course, greed, government and powerful companies. One wonders who are the real militants in this story…

From the Notable Achievements Corner

Congratulations to Masha Hamilton for her Women's National Book Award for her literary achievements and work in bringing literacy to undeveloped countries. Also, three cheers for Emily St. John Mandel who is shortlisted for the Indie Booksellers Award for Singer's Gun (although it could just as easily been Last Night in Montreal which is also a great book.)

If you wish to congratulate them yourself, we strongly suggest contacting them on their respective FaceBook pages and give them a virtual high-five!

Summer Selections Sneak Peek

A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano (Penguin Press) is our third pick and second hardcover of the year. "Crippled by lupus at twenty-five, celebrated author Flannery O'Connor was forced to leave New York City and return home to Andalusia, her family farm in Milledgeville, Georgia. Years later, as Flannery is finishing a novel and tending to her menagerie of peacocks, her mother drags her to the wedding of a family friend." An so begins the description.

I don't want to give too much away, so suffice to say that my companion reader loved it and thinks that you will, too. 'Nuf said. It will be released in July and we hope to have signed copies of the book for our members.
